Our Story

How We Met

Our story began on April 19, 2016. Future groomsman Josh and Stephen were hanging out with some friends, when Josh asked if he could invite a few more people over. Stephen said, “Of course!”, and minutes later Elizabeth walked through the doors. They quickly struck up a conversation about each other’s careers, and upon learning that Elizabeth worked in biotech, Stephen started bragging all that he knew all about centrifuges (surprise, not much). From there Elizabeth learned that Stephen was very ticklish (much to Stephen’s dismay, as she did not discover that he disliked being tickled until much later). Stephen followed up with Elizabeth later that night via Facebook Messenger recalling several jokes from their first meeting.

A few weeks later, Stephen and Elizabeth planned their first date on an upcoming Monday for dinner at Bonefish Grill. In the days leading up to the date, they spent several late nights texting until 2-3 AM, and they decided their planned date was going to be too long of a wait.

So, on the very next day, May 15th, 2016, Stephen and Elizabeth ended up going on their true first date: a brunch buffet at Blind Pig. It had been a month since seeing each other, and they were both a bit nervous. They sat and talked for about 15 minutes before getting up to go grab food. The first buffet item was a chafer of churros, to which Stephen exclaimed, “Look! Chamerras!” As they chatted over their meal Elizabeth learned just how many words Stephen pronounced wrong… or just didn’t know? For example: Elizabeth was a nanny for 3 1⁄2 years and told Stephen about a sweet little boy she looked after whose name was Montgomery. “Oh, like the cheese!”, declared Stephen. “????”, the only reaction Elizabeth had was to stare at him in puzzlement. “You know, Montgomery jack…the cheese…”, he said. Stephen was so funny and unique that Elizabeth couldn’t resist going on more dates with him!

The Proposal

Day dates were always one of Elizabeth and Stephen’s favorite things. They would coordinate to take the same day off work so they could have a full day’s worth of a date. So, when it came time to pop the question, Stephen knew it had to be during a day date. The plan was set after he coordinated with Elizabeth’s boss for her to take a day off, scouted out the perfect spot on a trail in Estes Park with his best man [and brother] Zach and groomsman Tyler the week before, and setting up a method secretly take pictures to capture the moment. All that was left for Stephen to act like he had never been to that spot before (which isn’t hard for him).

After pulling up driving directions, and acting confused at each trail fork, they finally made it up to the spot. Zach and Tyler were ready and waiting behind a rock to sneak some pictures. Having pseudo-faked a knee injury early along on the trail, Elizabeth’s first reaction was to try and help Stephen when he knelt down. Once she realized what was happening, a smile struck her face and she said YES.
